Gas Leak Causes Explosion

Last updated on Monday, January 12, 2015

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Wayne Township firefighters battled an early morning fire shortly after 1 a.m. Monday on Vine Street, just south of Rockville Road.

Fire crews say the house exploded and was fully involved when they arrived.

WTHR News reports, it took firefighters some time to put out the flames, mainly because they had to get the all clear from the gas company before they could extinguish the fire. It appears to be a gas leak that caused the explosion, although it is still early in the investigation.

Wayne Twp. Fire spokesman Mike Pruitt told WTHR that nobody was home in the rental house. A neighbor said he heard the explosion.

"I was sleeping on my couch," said Bill Williams, a neighbor. "I woke up and heard a big boom and shook my house and thought it was a transformer, but didn't see anything. Looked out to front and seen fire next door, and the house was completely down."

Neighbors don't think anyone was inside the house at the time of the fire, but fire investigators are still trying to determine whether anyone lived in the home. Right now, they don't find anything 'suspicious' about the fire.
