(COLUMBUS) - Columbus Police are reminding area residents about the importance of protecting their valuables.
Sgt. Matt Harris, the department's Public Information Officer, says there was a string of thefts from unlocked vehicles in the Country Wood Farms addition on the city's south side. The thefts took place between Thursday night and early Friday morning. In each case, Harris says the valuables were in plain view and could be accessed by simply opening a vehicle door.
A complete tally of the items stolen, along with the total numbers of victims, have not been released. Harris did confirm that at least two handguns were among the items taken. With the holidays, some residents may have been victims but are not aware of it, especially if they are on vacation and haven't left their homes recently.
Police urge you to put valuables in a secure location, out of site. Harris says it is a good idea to have a list of serial numbers for your valuables in case they are retrieved, or are being sold to pawn shops and second-hand stores. Having this information will help get your items returned to you.
Anyone with information about these thefts are urged to contact the Columbus Police Department at 376-2600. Information can be left anonymously.
