(INDIANAPOLIS) - The nationwide flu epidemic has now claimed 36 lives in Indiana.
New numbers from the state health department show 31 new flu deaths. All of them occurred within a week.
The agency's latest report from the last week in December revealed the sudden increase. The majority of the victims were over the age of 65.
While this year's flu has been deadliest among older patients, it's been the most prevalent in a younger age group. Nearly 40 percent of flu-like cases reported in Indiana were in the 5- to 24-year-old range.
Medical experts have said this year's vaccine is less effective than they'd hoped. But they insist getting a flu shot is still the best way to protect against the virus.
