(INDIANAPOLIS) - An Indianapolis police officer was injured and a suspect was killed Thursday night on the city’s east side.
The incident began shortly before 7:00 when an officer was conducting a traffic stop. One of the passengers in the vehicle got out of the car and ran. Another officer responding to the scene located the male suspect near the entrance to the Amber Woods Apartments. The suspect reportedly fired shots at the officer who returned fire. A private security guard in the area also exchanged gunfire with the suspect.
Police called the shootout an "intense firefight" which ended when the suspect stopped firing his weapon. The suspect was taken to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition where he later died. The officer sustained a gunshot wound to the right foot and was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital in good condition.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. A separate internal investigation will be conducted and the officer will be placed on administrative leave which is standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting.
IMPD says the area in which the incident took place is located in one of the six focus areas recently identified by the Department of Public Safety.
