(INDIANAPOLIS) - Republican Gov. Mike Pence has proposed 2 percent and 1 percent increases in Indiana school funding over the next two years, with the money expected to help cover additional spending for private school vouchers and charter schools.
The governor's proposal for spending about $31 billion over two years is being presented Thursday to the State Budget Committee.
State management and budget director Chris Atkins says the spending plan would leave the state with a reserve of nearly $2 billion without any proposed tax changes.
The plan would give $1,500 more per student for charter schools at an estimated cost of $41 million. It also removes the school voucher program's limit on per-student funding. That's estimated to cost $4 million yearly.
The Legislature has until late April to approve the budget.
