(FORT WAYNE) - Fort Wayne police are investigating a fatal shooting that happened in the 1500 block of 4th Street Friday night.
Officers were called to a home around 10 p.m. When officers arrived, they determined that there was an apparent negligent discharge when a gun hit a 5-year-old girl in the face.
Police spokesman Officer Jeremy Webb said that the initial investigation indicates the girl was killed when a gun fired accidentally.
Webb says police have heard varying descriptions from witnesses about what exactly happened, including that the gun fired when the girl grabbed it in her father's hand and that it fired when the father tried to take the weapon from the girl.
Police said the victim was taken from the scene in critical condition. According to a police spokesperson, she later died at the hospital.
