Deputy Injured During Scuffle Over Flare Gun

Last updated on Tuesday, February 17, 2015

(BARTHOLOMEW) - A Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Deputy was injured while responding to a battery complaint on Friday morning.

According to a press release, Sgt. T.A. Smith was investigating a suspicious male sitting in a vehicle. When he arrived the man refused to cooperate with police and get out of the vehicle.

Sgt. Smith opened the door and that is when he noticed a flare gun between the man's legs.

The man then raised the flare gun to his head.

In an effort to prevent the man from hurting himself, Sgt. Smith scuffled with the man fighting over the flare gun.

The man was able to pull the trigger, but Sgt. Smith put his hand between the hammer and the primer, which kept the gun from firing.

Sgt. Smith was then able to wrestle the man to the ground and retrieve the flare gun.

Sgt. Smith suffered a small puncture wound to his thumb and was treated and released from Columbus Regional Hospital.

The man was also taken to the hospital for a mental evaluation.
