(STATEHOUSE) - The bill that would grant Sunday carry out alcohol sales is getting a third reading and vote in the House next week.
House Bill 1624 cleared another legislative hurdle Thursday. This after lawmakers rejected one amendment that would've removed language from the bill allowing Sunday carry sales along with another that would've removed the behind-the-counter sales provision of the bill.
The bill aims to legalize Sunday carry alcohol sales and forces big box retailers to eliminate self checkout of alcohol in addition to confining beer and wine to one specific section of stores as well as the behind-the-counter mandate.
Retailers like Walmart say the move will result in $50 million in renovation costs. Kroger Spokesman John Elliot says the bill will be "highly destructive" to their bottom line and cost-cutting including layoffs could ensue. However, many liquor stores say the measure levels the playing field.
