(TRAFALGAR) - Investigators hope to track down the person or people who caused a couple Johnson County mailboxes to explode over the weekend.
The Johnson County Sheriff's Office reports there were two incidents of mailboxes exploding in Trafalgar in the area of County Road 525 South and County Road 200 West.
Sheriff Doug Cox says investigators believe the criminals involved used plastic bottle bombs to destroy the mailboxes.
In each incident, residents reported hearing a loud boom and then finding their mailboxes torn to shreds.
Several pieces of the destroyed mailboxes landed in neighbors' yards.
Mailboxes are federal property and anyone convicted of vandalizing them faces jail time and a $250,000 fine.
Anyone with information on these crimes is urged to report it to the Johnson County Sheriff's Department at (317) 736-9155.
