(TERRE HAUTE) - Indiana State Police are investigating a fatal shooting Wednesday evening involving a Terre Haute police officer.
Shortly before 5:30 p.m., officers with the Terre Haute Police Department and the U.S. Marshal's Service Task Force were searching for a suspect wanted on a warrant out of Vigo County. The suspect was wanted on charges of rape, criminal confinement and domestic battery.
Officers located the suspect who fled in his car after spotting the officers in the area of 25th and Polar Streets. After a short pursuit, officers attempted to box the suspect in with their vehicles but the suspect began ramming the police vehicles with his car. Officers broke out the suspect's side windows and used a stun gun on the suspect with no effect.
Investigators say the suspect is believed to have made an aggressive threatening move with his hands inside the vehicle which caused a Terre Haute Police officer to fire his weapon at the suspect, hitting him in the right torso area.
The suspect was taken to Union Hospital in Terre Haute where he was pronounced dead shortly after 6:00.
The name of the suspect is being withheld pending notification of family and State Police say the name of the officer will be released at a later time.
