(FORT WAYNE) - The child who was pulled from a house fire in Fort Wayne on Saturday passed away Wednesday morning.
According to the report from the Allen County Coroner, Jelan Whitten-Strother died at 5:13 a.m. from a brain injury due to smoke inhalation.
WANE News reported he had been declared brain dead on Sunday and remained on life support until his death.
Neighbors were able to help pull three adults and a baby to safety out of the Fleming Avenue home, but could not get to the 8-year-old boy.
Firefighters went in and were able to get to the child. They treated him at the scene before medics arrived and took him to a hospital in critical condition.
The last word from the Fort Wayne Fire Department was that the cause of the fire was under investigation.
