(UNDATED) - A group of Hoosiers says Central Time is the best option for all of Indiana.
The Indiana Central Time Coalition says much of Indiana is in the wrong time zone. Indiana State Rep. Jeff Thompson (R-Hendricks Co.) is calling for a legislative summer study committee to weigh the pros and cons of eastern versus central time.
Central time advocates say Daylight Saving Time, which the nation observes this Sunday, is not the issue. They and Rep. Thompson say the issue involves the lack of sunlight and the biological clocks of millions of Hoosiers, particularly school kids left in darkness as they head out to school early in the morning. They cite a federal report that connects the issue with safety, student academic performance, mental health and truancy.
Rep. Thompson says Indiana never had a true say in the switch to eastern time. He says it was mandated by the federal government.
Thompson adds that central time also has economic benefits. He adds that if the study committee is approved, they'll likely get underway come August.
