(INDIANAPOLIS) - Eric Holcomb, former advisor to Governor Mitch Daniels and Senator Dan Coats, former Indiana Republican Party chairman, and United States Navy veteran, will make an announcement regarding Indiana’s 2016 United States Senate race tomorrow, Thursday, March 26, 2015, at 12:00pm ET at the Westin Indianapolis.
Holcomb was most recently the chief of staff for Senator Coats's state office, but Holcomb announced he was taking a leave of absence from that job to consider a Senate run a few hours after Coats said he would not run for another term.
Holcomb was previously chairman of the State Republican Party and before that an adviser to former Governor Mitch Daniels. He is the first of what is expected to be a large number of Republicans to run for the open Senate seat.
Many of the state's Republican members of Congress are believed to be considering a run - Marlin Stutzman lost to Coats in the 2010 Republican primary. Luke Messer and Larry Buschon are the only Republican Congressman to say they will not make a Senate run.
Other Republican names that have been mentioned include several state lawmakers such as House Speaker Brian Bosma and state Senators Mike Delph and Jim Merritt, Democrats who have said they may run for Coats's seat include former Congressman Baron Hill and State Representative Christina Hale of Indianapolis.
