(UNDATED) - An Amtrak line that has linked the Circle City to Windy Chicago for the last 35 years is less than a month away from being a thing of the past.
State officials have announced that April 1st will be the last day of operation for The Hoosier State Amtrak Passenger line, and they say a federal policy change is the reason why.
That policy change came late last years from the Federal Railroad Administration and would have essentially designated Indiana as a rail carrier, meaning they would be subject to federal standards. INDOT says that would have meant a significant increase in cost, paperwork, and liability.
The Hoosier State line is the least traveled Amtrak route. The state was working with Amtrak and Iowa pacific for a deal that would have completely turned over operations.
State officials say they would require a federal policy change before they would change their minds.
