(INDIANAPOLIS) - The man accused of killing an Indianapolis Metro Police officer last July is being moved to a new facility prior to his trial due to concerns about a “clergyman” who has been visiting him and offering illegal advice.
Defense attorneys for 25-year-old Major Davis Jr. were granted the court order to have him moved Thursday to the Wabash Correctional Facility in Carlisle. The defense attorneys argued in court documents last week that the clergyman, who they did not name, has potentially harmed Davis' case numerous times.
Documents reference a court hearing March 6 when Davis argued for a fast and speedy trial, a request that came against the advice of his public defenders. The motion filed last week also says the clergyman claims to be refusing to turn over information about the case to Davis until he is paid by the Marion County Public Defender Agency to do so, an act attorneys say is arguably the crime of obstruction of justice.
Attorneys also claim the clergyman has interrupted several jail visits between Davis and his court-appointed attorneys. As a clergyman, the person has access to Davis' detention area at the Marion County Jail.
Major Davis' jury trial is scheduled to start February 6, 2017.
