(INDIANAPOLIS) - An Indiana Senate committee has unanimously passed a bill that would give terminally ill patients easier access to experimental drugs that have not received full federal approval.
Senate health committee members voted 10-0 Wednesday to advance the measure allowing patients to try experimental drug treatments that have passed the first phase of the Food and Drug Administration's approval process.
Lawmakers also adopted an amendment that would protect medical professionals who treat these patients from liability.
Supporters say the bill would shorten the time patients wait for potentially life-saving drugs. There has been little opposition, but lawmakers expressed concerns about overstepping the federal process and tracking and monitoring drug usage.
House members passed the "right to try" legislation last month. It now goes to the Senate for consideration.
