(SHELBY CO.) - Two men on a nighttime canoe trip in Shelby County have been pulled from icy water after their watercraft capsized.
WTHI reports a 55-year-old father and his 22 year-old-son had put into the Big Blue River at Greenwood.
A Shelbyville Fire Dept. spokesman says the canoe capsized along a densely wooded section of the river. The men were able to grab onto a floating log.
Remarkably, they managed to keep a cellphone from falling into the river, and were able to call for help. After a difficult trek through woods and fields, rescuers located the men were able to pull the duo out of the water.
They were taken to Shelbyville Major Hospital for treatment for hypothermia. Rescuers say that because the men were wearing life jackets and managed to save their cellphone and call for help, they survived a very dangerous situation.
