Underground Explosions Rocking Downtown Indianapolis

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Fire crews and police responded around 6:45 a.m. this morning to a report of an explosion at intersection of North and Capitol in downtown Indianapolis.

Crews are currently on the scene assessing the situation. 

Indianapolis Fire Department Spokesperson Rita Reith says, 2-3 buildings in the area have been evacuated including a warehouse.

All utilities, including Indianapolis Power and Light, are on the scene and the power has been shut off in a six block area. They hoped to have power restored by 9 a.m.

One person was stuck on an elevator at 402 N. Michigan and was rescued by firefighters

No word yet of any injuries.

The Indianapolis Fire Department is asking people to avoid the area and to not walk near manhole covers.

Several explosions have been reported in the area with manhole covers flying into the air and smoke bellowing from the manholes.

Officials are saying a similar explosion was reported on Monday on Mass Avenue in downtown Indianapolis. It appeared a primary oil chamber in an underground vault failed causing it to explode.
