(UNDATED) - Spring is finally here and—while Monday not have seemed very springy—springtime bugs aren’t far behind.
That's especially troublesome for your four legged friends who have a host of diseases that are very prevalent as temperatures warm up.
Veterinarians around the state are reminding Hoosiers to get their pets in and make sure they are up to date on shots.
Dr. Joe Debrota says cases of rabies, distemper, parvo, adenovirus, and parainfluenza increase during the first few warms months of the year. That's partially because pets are out and about. Just being outside can expose your pet to all sorts of illnesses. Mosquitos carry heartworm disease, ticks can carry lyme disease, and that cute puppy at the dog park could inadvertently pass worms onto your dog.
Debrota says that all of these problems can be prevented with regular vaccinations and treatments. He says anything you get from your vet should help protect your animal, and any questions you have should be directed their way.
