(UNDATED) - It hasn’t hit Indiana yet but officials with the BBB are warning residents to be on the lookout for “craigslist rental scams”.
It has happened elsewhere around the country, where someone lists a property they do not own, or have any involvement in, for rent. When you contact that person they will likely offer you the property but only if you wire or deposit a certain amount of money first.
Tim Maniscalo, President of the BBB serving Central Indiana, says these scams often involve homes that were recently posted for sale. This can leave you, the renter, in a very awkward situation with the actual homeowners or realtors and leave you high and dry when you try to get back any lost money.
Maniscalo says some simple research can help. He advises that you verify the property is up for rent before wiring any money and never exchange money without a person to person interaction.
You can visit BBB.org to check any companies or go to the local real estate association with questions.
