(NOTRE DAME) - A 21-year-old graduating Notre Dame senior died early Saturday morning after falling from the roof of the Joyce Center.
WNDU reports, around 3:45 a.m. Saturday, a Notre Dame Security Police officer was approached by two students who said they needed help. The 21-year-old student was found unresponsive on the ground near Gate 7.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene where they tried to resuscitate the student using CPR and other efforts, but could not.
An initial investigation reveals the victim was with a small group of students who gained access to the roof of the Joyce Center. It had rained Saturday morning so the roof was slippery and wet from precipitation at the time.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends after this terrible tragedy," Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., the University president said. "It is a profound sadness for all of us, on this graduation weekend, to lose someone so young and brimming with promise."
The student's name has not yet been released, pending family notification.
The University Counseling Center and Campus Ministry is available to offer support to anyone who may need it.
