(PLAINFIELD) - Duke Energy has a new Indiana leader to serve its more than 800,000 Hoosier customers. Melody Birmingham-Byrd is now president of its Indiana operations.
She replaces Doug Esamann, whom the company announced will now be president of its Midwest and Florida Regions and a corporate executive vice president. Both positions were effective June 1.
Birmingham-Byrd has comprehensive knowledge and experience with Indiana's operations. For the past three years she has worked out of the company's Plainfield regional headquarters serving as senior vice president of Midwest delivery operations. In this position she managed the operations of the company's electric distribution system in Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky, including construction, maintenance, operations, engineering, and resource and project management.
Prior to the merger between Duke Energy and Progress Energy in 2012, she served as vice president of the Southern Region for Progress Energy Carolinas.
"Melody has more than 20 years of leadership and managerial experience in the electric as well as the automotive industries," Esamann said. "She will be a solid, strong leader for Duke Energy Indiana."
Duke Energy Indiana's new president says one of her first tasks will be meeting with customers and community leaders statewide. "Doing what's best for our customers and communities is a priority for me. I have the advantage of relying on more than 2,500 dedicated Indiana-based employees to help get that done," Birmingham-Byrd said.
Birmingham-Byrd earned a bachelor's degree in organizational leadership and management from Purdue University. She also has a master's in business administration from Strayer University.
She is currently a member of the board of the Indiana Energy Association and the Indiana Manufacturers Association as well as other national industry and trade organizations related to the electric industry.
