(MORRISTOWN) - Indiana Conservation Officers arrested a Greenwood man following a river rescue this afternoon on the Big Blue River near the town of Morristown in Shelby County

This afternoon at approximately 4:57 p.m., First Responders were dispatched to the area of 3821 North Morristown Road in reference to 4 kayakers that had capsized and were swept down river. The kayakers were able to reach a nearby island, but were stranded and surrounded by swift moving water.

The Shelby County Swift Water Rescue Team was able to reach the kayakers and enact a rescue. Once safe on land, Officers investigating the incident detected the strong odor of burnt marijuana emanating from the kayakers. A subsequent search of the subjects and their vehicle turned up drug paraphernalia and raw marijuana.

Lou K. Costa, of Greenwood was arrested and booked into the Shelby County Jail on charges of Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Paraphernalia.

Indiana Conservation Officers urge the public to avoid swift moving water, especially when local rivers and streams are at flood stage due to the large amount of recent rainfall.
