(UNDATED) - Illinois’ new Governor has scrapped plans for the Illiana Expressway, but it wasn’t a decision that caught INDOT completely off guard.
As political feuds rage on in Illinois roadwork on the Illiana Expressway is a standstill on both side of the state-line.
It's something that INDOT officials probably saw coming and made the decision months ago to halt work and focus their efforts elsewhere. It was in December that INDOT and IDOT received approval from the Federal Highway Administration for the need of the expressway, and by the time February rolled around INDOT had stopped work. That's because January marked the beginning of Gov. Bruce Rauner's tenure, and his administration almost immediately announced they would be reviewing the Illiana plans. That's when INDOT made the call, and several months' later Illinois has announced plans to kill the project all together.
The money Indiana had set aside for that section of the expressway is being utilized elsewhere.
Rauner has not gone out of his way to make friend with Indiana officials, have said shortly after taking office that he would have no problem pilfering jobs and business away from Indiana during the RFRA scandal.
