(INDIANAPOLIS) - A fiery semi-tractor crash late last night on I-70 has claimed the life of an Ohio woman.
Last night at approximately 10:30 p.m., Indiana State Police troopers were dispatched to I-70 WB at the 83.0 mm to the report of a personal injury crash involving a semi-tractor trailer.
Preliminary investigation revealed that 50-year-old Herbert Oien of McMinnville, OR was operating a 2015 semi-tractor box trailer WB on I-70 at the 83.3mm in the left lane. The driver stated he heard a "pop" and the trailer began to swing to the left. Oien attempted to correct the truck and trailer, however he lost control and crossed over into the right lane and drove upon the concrete barrier wall. The truck and trailer slid sideways along the concrete barrier wall until the truck impacted with the concrete support for the I-65 NB overpass.
Oien was able to extricate himself from the cab, but his passenger, 45-year-old Tanya Mitchell of Toronto, OH who was in the sleeping berth before the crash, was pinned in the cab. Oien, and several persons that stopped to help, attempted to extract her from the cab before being driven away by flames that was started by ruptured fuel tanks that engulfed the truck. Mitchell was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Marion County Coroner's office.
The interstate was closed or restricted for approximately four hours while the crash was investigated and the wreckage cleared.
Investigating Officers: Trooper Brock McCooe and Sergeant Mark Helms, Indiana State Police.
Assisting Agencies: Indiana Department of Transportation, Marion County Coroner's Office.
