(JENNINGS CO.) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating the apparent drowning death of a North Vernon man that occurred in Country Squire Lakes.
At approximately 9:25 p.m. on Monday, Jennings County Dispatchers received a 911 call reporting that a man was swimming to a capsized boat when he became distressed and went under the water.
Indiana Conservation Officers, Jennings County Sheriff Deputies, Jennings County Fire and EMS and several emergency responders arrived shortly after. Several Divers also rushed to the scene to begin rescue efforts.
At approximately 3:51 a.m., the victim, 40-year-old Joseph M. Payne Jr., North Vernon, was recovered by divers and was pronounced dead by the Jennings County Coroner's Office. Payne was not wearing a life jacket.
Indiana Conservation Officers encourage all citizens to utilize a personal floatation device at all times in or around water, no matter how proficient a swimmer may be.
