(RANDOLPH CO.) - Police are searching for an inmate who escaped from the Randolph County Jail early this morning.
Robert Lewis was last seen wearing a yellow jumpsuit around 3:20 a.m. According to Kicks 96, the 26-year-old was arrested in October, when he was accused of stealing almost $80,000 from Charlie Shaw, owner of the Winchester Speedway. According to the Randolph County Sheriff's Department, Lewis was cleaning the jail lobby when he ran out the front doors while a jail officer went to the bathroom to empty the trash.
According to RacingNews.co, the investigation began in September 2014 when Shaw reported that proceeds from the Labor Day race weekend were missing. Dean and his girlfriend, Briana Hawley, were later arrested in the case. Hawley had been a "trophy girl" at the speedway. Dean had worked for Astral Industries in Lynn, Ind., which is also owned by Shaw.
Police had received a tip that Hawley bought a new vehicle within days of the burglary at Shaw's home. Dean was set to be sentenced in the case on June 25 and had been behind bars since his arrest.
Anyone with information about Lewis' whereabouts should call the Randolph County Sheriff's Department at (765) 584-1721.
