(HANCOCK CO.) - A rollover crash on I-70 claimed the life of a 6-year-old boy Tuesday afternoon.
The accident happened around 4:10 p.m. on I-70 eastbound near the 107 mile marker.
According to an Indiana State Police report, a small church bus was traveling east on I-70 and for an unknown reason traveled off the south side of the roadway and rolled over.
Police say 12 passengers were on the bus. Of those, seven were injured.
A 6-year-old boy was thrown from the bus. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Hancock County coroner.
The driver, 53-year-old Charles Goodman, of Gary, was also ejected and then pinned underneath the bus.
Police say Goodman was alert and conscious at the scene. He was flown to the hospital by a medical helicopter.
During the course of the investigation, police determined Goodman was driving on a suspended driver's license and was wanted on a warrant in Lake County for failing to appear in court for a traffic offense.
Police say the crash appears to be the result of driver error, and there was no evidence of mechanical failure.
Although the bus does not qualify as a commercial motor vehicle, due to the circumstances of the crash it will be inspected by the Indiana State Police Commercial Motor Vehicle Division.
The investigation is ongoing.
