(CORYDON) - A Corydon man is behind bars facing several charges after he allegedly raped and brutally beat a woman, according to police.
According to police, the incident began June 28 with an argument between 25-year-old Joseph Brown, of Corydon, and the woman. The argument quickly escalated to the woman being raped and beaten in a Corydon home on Skyway Drive.
According to court documents, the woman was trapped inside the home, yelling "help" and "please stop," as loud as she could in an attempt to alert neighbors.
But no one heard her as Brown beat and raped her.
"He held her down, choked her, punched her in the face while raping her, causing extreme injuries to her face, including a fractured orbital socket as well as a fractured cheek bone," says Harrison County Prosecutor Otto Schalk
Court documents Brown told detectives he hit her and covered her mouth with his hand, "because she was screaming and crying" as he raped her.
"She tried to flee the scene, he prevented her from leaving," Schalk says
Brown told police he forced her to drive him to Smokey's Discount Tobacco in Corydon, removed the keys from her car's ignition preventing her from leaving. But she found a spare key, got away and contacted authorities.
Brown was arrested on an unrelated case in Louisville on June 28 for possession of stolen property.
He is now being held in the Harrison County Jail on charges of criminal confinement, battery and two counts of rape.
If convicted, he faces up to 22 years in prison.
