(UNDATED) - A day after the Supreme Court put one attempt to regulate power plants on hold, environmentalists are challenging Governor Pence’s opposition to another.
Governor Pence declared last week he'll defy a proposed EPA regulation expected to demand a 20-percent cut in carbon dioxide emissions, unless it's changed significantly. The Clean Power Plan is expected to be finalized in August. Pence calls it "ill-conceived," and is threatening a fresh legal battle over a rule he argues exceeds the agency's authority.
IU School of Medicine Professor Emeritus Steve Jay contends Pence's warnings of soaring electric bills are shortsighted. Even if air-conditioning costs more in the short run, Jay argues there are long-term savings in reducing health problems linked to global warming.
Jay was among 25 activists who gathered at the statehouse to argue Indiana needs to pull its weight in combating climate change. Purdue environmental health sciences professor Frank Rosenthal contends climate change will lead to potentially fatal heat waves. And the Sierra Club's "Beyond Coal" campaign cites EPA warnings it could increase concentrations of pollutants and accelerate the spread of some diseases.
