Johnson Co. Sheriff Deputies Cleared In Shooting

Last updated on Tuesday, July 21, 2015

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Two Johnson County sheriff’s deputies were involved in a shooting at Glenns Valley Nature Park on Bluff Road on the Indianapolis south side the morning of July 9.

Following an IMPD investigation into the shooting, Deputies Troy Montgomery and Daniel Tomey were cleared of any criminal wrongdoing July 20 and will resume patrol duties this week.

A woman called police and said an ex-boyfriend was texting her that he had access to weapons and was going to harm himself. Deputies checked the home where the distraught suspect was believed to be, but did not locate him.

Deputies later located the man's white GMC pick-up truck at Glenns Valley Nature Park and contacted IMPD for assistance. The deputies and IMPD officers became engaged in a standoff with the man, 31-year-old Daryll Kent Hedges, and at some point felt the man's actions were threatening enough for them to draw their weapons and shoot.

Hedges was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital in critical condition. He later died.
