(MICHIGAN CITY) - Indiana Conservation Officers responded to multiple black bear sightings in the Motts Park area of Michigan City last night.
Several residents reported a bear rifling through trash and bird feeders near their homes. The bear was reported walking on porches and standing against patio doors.
Responding officers from the Michigan City Police Department and Indiana State Police Lowell Post found the bear in the backyard of a home. Officers yelled at the bear, causing it to walk off into a wooded area.
As Conservation Officers and Indiana State Police Officers were gathering information from various residents in the area, the bear was sighted again in a nearby backyard. The bear was eating out of trash can. Officers again yelled at the bear and chased it into a wooded area. The bear eventually disappeared from the Officer's sight.
Conservation Officers will be meeting with a Department of Natural Resources biologist and local officials to discuss potential bear related concerns and solutions.
Residents in the area are asked to take precautions to secure trash indoors, knowing the bear could be in the area.
If the bear is encountered, a person should make lots of noise to discourage the bear from the area. Do not attempt to attract the bear with food.
Indiana Conservation Officers were assisted throughout the evening by Indiana State Police, Michigan City Police and the Laporte County Sheriff's Office.
