Last updated on Monday, July 27, 2015

(UNDATED) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating an ATV accident in Spencer County and a UTV accident in Switzerland County that killed two young girls Sunday.

Crews responded to an ATV accident fatality in Rockport in Spencer County around 11:25 a.m.

An 11-year-old girl was operating a Honda Rubicon ATV with her friend, also 11, riding on the back as a passenger. After driving up hill, the girl lost control of the ATV, causing it to overturn. The ATV rolled on top of the girl, trapping her underneath. The friend was able to pull her out and get help. The girl was pronounced dead on the scene by the Spencer County Coroner.

The girls were not wearing helmets or protective equipment while operating the ATV, officers said.

In Switzerland County, officers responded to an ATV accident involving injuries at approximately 12:15 p.m. When crews arrived on the scene, they found a UTV had rolled over and trapped a 10-year-old girl underneath.

The driver, 50, was operating the UTV with her friend in the passenger seat. The girl and her mother were in the bed of the UTV.

The girl was recovered from underneath the UTV and airlifted to King's Daughters' Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
