(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana prosecutors are urging legislators to dial back a two-year-old loosening of drug sentences.
Until 2013, drug dealing in Indiana carried six-to-20 years in prison, and under some circumstances could carry as much as 50.
A top-to-bottom revision of the criminal code rolled the maximum back to 12 years.
David Powell with the Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council says many addicts don't want to go into treatment, and shorter sentences remove the justice system's leverage to prod them into it.
