(INDIANAPOLIS) - A trend of increasing gas prices continued Thursday morning when several stations started listing gasoline for $2.99 a gallon across greater Indianapolis.
The price was 67 cents a gallon more than what was reported on Tuesday, days after a partial shutdown of the BP Whiting Refinery in northern Indiana.
The company said it stopped the largest of three crude distillation units for "unscheduled repair work."
Industry watchers with GasBuddy.com said as the region's largest refinery, the move has most affected gas prices in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Illinois.
Experts considered the sudden spike temporary during a period of predicted decline.
"I believe this refinery issue to be a speed bump - albeit a large speed bump - on the road to lower prices," Patrick DeHaan, GasBuddy's senior petroleum analyst. "I still expect gas prices to come down and, as we approach Christmas, could still knock on the door of $2 a gallon."
