(UNDATED) - This September, Indiana will host events for all ages in recognition of the 20th anniversary of a statewide celebration of archaeology.
Archaeology Month is an opportunity to celebrate and learn about Indiana archaeology. Hoosier history buffs can meet archaeologists and learn about the state's past.
Events are held every September by universities, museums, organizations and individuals throughout Indiana. The DNR Division of Historic Preservation & Archaeology coordinates Archaeology Month.
Celebrating archaeology statewide started in 1996 with Indiana Archaeology Week. In 2002, the celebration was expanded to Indiana Archaeology Month.
"Archaeology tells us not only about the past but also sheds light about ourselves today and our future," said Cameron Clark, DNR director and State Historic Preservation Officer. "Archaeology Month provides a perfect way for Hoosiers to find out how, with programs that are not only educational and informative but also fun."
A schedule of events and additional information for Archaeology Month is available at dnr.IN.gov/historic, or by contacting Amy Johnson at ajohnson@dnr.IN.gov or (317) 232-6982.
Commemorative posters and shirts are available. Shirts are $10 each and can be purchased from the DNR Customer Service Center at (317) 232-4200 or toll-free at (877) 463-6367.
Archaeologists have recorded more than 66,600 sites in Indiana since the early 1800s, helping to shape public understanding of the prehistoric and historic people.
