(UNDATED) - Portage Senator Karen Tallian has ended her campaign for governor.
In a written announcement, Tallian didn't give a reason for her withdrawal, but her fundraising never got off the ground. She raised less than 24-thousand dollars for her campaign, much of that a transfer from her Senate campaign fund.
Tallian might have hoped her northwest Indiana base would give her a foothold with industrial unions, but the United Steelworkers endorsed 2012 Democratic nominee John Gregg on Saturday, and the Indiana AFLCIO followed suit with an unusal early endorsement on Monday, less than an hour before Tallian's announcement.
Coupled with state school superintendent Glenda Ritz's exit earlier this month, Tallian's exit leaves Gregg unopposed for the Democratic nomination for now.
Tom Sugar, a longtime aide to former Governor Evan Bayh, has said he expects to decide next month whether to jump into the race. And Hammond Mayor Tom McDermott Jr. hasn't ruled out a run, though he's focused for now on his mayoral reelection campaign.
Both Tallian and Ritz have endorsed Gregg, who praised Tallian as "a true champion for working Hoosiers."
