Construction Crews Complete More Than 70 Projects At Purdue University

Last updated on Monday, August 24, 2015

(WEST LAFAYETTE) - While some students use the summer to take a break from campus life, construction crews used the time to complete more than 70 projects with a combined estimated cost of $17 million at Purdue University.

WFLI reports that crews are still working, and while they do students will also be working to navigate around the construction.

While crews continue various construction projects around the university, students headed back for the fall semester are having to find new ways to get around.

However, the university is no stranger to construction crews.

Purdue Physical Facilities Construction Director Robert Smith said workers spent the summer completing the 70+ projects in order to maintain the campus.

"We try to schedule some of our restoration and maintenance projects around the academic calendar to minimize disruptions to students, staff and faculty," Smith said.

Smith said a lot of work goes into keeping the campus up and running, but said it's worth the end result.

"We hope they don't realize the amount of work we have to put in to maintain the campus," said Smith. "That means we're doing our jobs if we're minimizing disruptions to the students activities."

Despite summer's record rainfall, Smith said all projects have been on schedule-that includes the construction of the Wilmeth Active Learning Center and the Honors Colleges and Residences. While work continues, Smith asks students to be cautious when near construction zones.

The construction may cause headaches for students having to find a new route through campus, but most Boilermakers see what will come as a result of the work.

As crews continue work at Purdue, Smith asks everyone on campus to stay informed.
