(BARTHOLOMEW CO.) - The Bartholomew County water rescue team helped eight canoeists Saturday night in two incidents. The team was called to Blues Canoe Livery on the Driftwood River Saturday night after four boaters had not returned by about 9:25 Saturday night. They had been in the water since 11 a.m.
The water rescue team put the airboat in at Heflin Park, just south of the canoe rental outfit, and at around 10 p.m. found four people stranded on the river because of the darkness and the water depth. The airboat took those canoeists back to Heflin Park, but the first four reported that they had helped another group of boaters who had a canoe capsize. The second group was last seen walking up the river bank toward Camp Atterbury.
Those two canoes were located near the Hendricks Ford bridge. Camp Atterbury was notified that there might be people lost on the base, and Reserve Deputy Andy Riddle was given permission to begin searching on the base.
Special Deputy James Ogilvie, a helicopter pilot, began searching from the air and found the four walking on the base. They were taken to a nearby gate and then taken to U.S. 31 and County Road 650N where they were checked by Columbus Regional Hospital paramedics.
Judy Jackson, spokeswoman for the sheriff's department, said they were fine except for a few cuts and scratches.
