(ANDERSON) - Health officials in a central Indiana county running a syringe exchange program aimed at slowing the spread of hepatitis C say they are disappointed in the early results.
Madison County Health Department spokeswoman Kellie Kelley told The Herald Bulletin only three people have signed up for the program and a total of 54 needles were exchanged during the program's first month. Kelly says the health department is working to build trust.
Kelley said local and state health officials were not surprised by the tepid early response. She says in Scott County, the first county to implement a needle exchange program, also started slowly.
Kelley says the department is receiving calls daily from people asking for details of the needle exchange program.
