(INDIANAPOLIS) - The countdown begins for the 2016 Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay.
The 92-county torch relay stems from the Olympic Torch Relay. It is an event designed to inspire and unify Hoosiers.
Indiana's version will pass a flame from torch bearer to torchbearer through 92 of the state's counties. The relay will also include watercraft, farm equipment, a racecar, horse and wagon, antique automobile, and others. These events are symbolic of the history and heritage of Indiana.
The relay will take place over a five week period in September and October of 2016. A flame will be passed by torchbearers, averaging 72 miles per day.
The Office of Tourism Development is now accepting nominations for torchbearers. They will select more than 1,800 Hoosiers who have demonstrated achievement, public service, acts of heroism and/or volunteer service to their neighborhood, community, region or state.
The relay will start and end at the statehouse in downtown Indianapolis.
