(COLUMBUS) - Highway crews in south-central Indiana are trying to save a crumbling road damaged in July by torrential rainfall.
The Bartholomew County Highway Department is trying to prevent a 150-foot section of Wolf Creek Road from falling about 30 feet into its namesake creek.
County highway engineer Danny Hollander tells The Republic the rural road's woes date back to mid-July, when up to 4 inches of rain fell on the area over two days.
Holland says continued erosion along the creek-side road and heavy traffic has moved the road dangerously close to Wolf Creek's edge.
To stabilize the soil beneath the road, crews are installing a retaining wall comprised of wire boxes filled with stacked stones along the steep slope. The project is slated for completion by September 11.
