(UNDATED) - The DNR Division of State Parks will encourage volunteerism and offer nature activities during the weekend of National Public Lands Day, Saturday, September 26.
National Public Lands Day is the nation's largest single-day volunteer effort for public lands.
Volunteer opportunities at Indiana state park properties on Sept. 26 include collecting wild prairie seeds for re-sowing on DNR properties, construction projects, gardening and trail clean up.
But National Public Lands Day isn't all work and no play. Properties also will offer hikes, pioneer activities, crafts and live bird shows. National Public Lands Day activities for Indiana state parks are posted at dnr.IN.gov/parklake/2443.htm.
Additionally, volunteer opportunities and fun activities will continue at many properties on Sunday.
National Public Lands Day is one of four key times when state parks focus on volunteer and giving opportunities. Volunteers are welcome all the time, but the other days in which service and giving are emphasized are Giving Tuesday (Dec. 1), Martin Luther King National Day of Service (Jan. 18, 2016) and National Volunteer Week (April 10-16, 2016). In 2014, volunteers contributed nearly 90,000 hours of service across the state.
For property-specific information on volunteer opportunities and a wide range of fall programs and special event weekends, see InterpretiveServices.IN.gov, or call the property you plan to visit.
