(UNDATED) - The odds of hitting a deer in Indiana aren’t getting any better, as numbers increased from 2014 to this year.
State Farm Insurance collected the data and found that the odds of an Indiana driver hitting a deer are now 1 in 142.
State Farm Spokesperson Missy Dundov says the numbers also mark the second straight year that odds have increased by more than 20%. In 2014 the odds were 1 in 172.
Indiana ranks 23rd for most dear collisions with the average claim at just over $4,000. The data also shows that October, November, and December are the most dangerous months with October heading the pack.
The company advises motorists be extra aware this time of year and be aware of your surroundings when traveling at high speeds. Dundov says the company does not encourage people to use devices like deer whistles on their vehicle and says there are no studies out there that prove their effectiveness. While she also notes the company does not discourage them she says people should depend on them to keep you safe.
While Indiana sits in the middle of the pack for deer collisions some neighboring states are worse off Michigan comes in at 10th on the list with a 1 in 97 rating and Kentucky is 11th with a 1 in 113 rate; West Virginia had the worst rating of the year with odds of 1 in 44.
