(SHELBYVILLE) - Saturday night at 8:20 p.m., officers from the Shelbyville Police Department were requested at a residence in the 800 block of West Washington Street to a call of a citizen dispute.
A Shelbyville police officer had made contact with the reporting citizen and was preparing to leave the residence when a male from the residence appeared on the porch with a hand gun waving it in a reckless manner. The male then fled back into the residence. The female fled to a neighbor's residence and the Shelbyville officer secured the perimeter and requested other officers to the scene.
Officers attempted to establish communications throughout the evening and early morning with the male by police loud speaker and cell phone with no type of response from the subject. Officers introduced a communications device into the residence, a remote control robot that allows officers to listen and speak with the subject, and the subject reportedly shot it twice with a long gun, disabling the robot.
Officers continued trying to establish communications throughout the early morning hours to no avail. Just before 5:30 a.m., the male subject exited a door and fired two shots from a hand gun at the Shelbyville Police tactical vehicle and then pointed the firearm at officers at which time officers from the Shelbyville Police Department and the Shelby County Sheriff's Department shot the subject.
The subject was transported to Major Hospital in Shelbyville where he was pronounced dead.
The names of the officers and the deceased are not anticipated to be released for at least 24 hours.
At the request of the Shelbyville Police Department, the Indiana State Police will be conducting the investigation.
Police action shooting investigations can take several weeks or more to complete depending on the complexity of the investigation. Once the investigation is completed it will be submitted to the Shelby County Prosecutor's Office for review and action as deemed appropriate by that office.
