(LAKE MICHIGAN) - Earl Helmuth of Nappanee, was recovered this morning at 8:07 a.m. from Lake Michigan by Indiana Conservation Officer divers.
Indiana Conservation Officers were assisted by the LaPorte County and Michigan City dive teams.
Helmuth was recovered in 12' of water approximately 20' from where he was last observed in the water.
Earlier - Indiana Conservation Officers responded to Lake Michigan near Washington Park after 6 people were swept into the water from the Lighthouse Pier.
According to police, 24-year-old Earl Helmuth, of Shipshewana, and 5 friends were taking photos near the end of the Lighthouse Pier when a large wave swept all of them into Lake Michigan.
The USCG was in the area and responded immediately to rescue the individuals.
Two persons were rescued by the USCG while three others were able to self-rescue. Helmuth did not make it out of the water and was last seen by his friends near the end of the lighthouse.
Indiana Conservation Officers joined the USCG in the search for Helmuth. Due to 10 -foot-waves and treacherous conditions,
Conservation Officer Divers and the County/Michigan City Dive Team members determined to suspend an underwater search until the following day.
Indiana Conservation Officers will use a remote operated vehicle and sonar in attempt to locate Helmuth. The search will resume early this morning.
