(INDIANAPOLIS) - Metro Police officers and Cumberland officers were called to the 10200 block of E. Washington Street just before 1 p.m. Saturday, after the suspect allegedly pointed a gun at a loss prevention officer at Burlington Coat Factory, then ran away.
WTHR reports, the loss prevention officer followed the suspect to the parking lot and kept him in sight while providing information to responding officers. A CPD officer saw the suspect lying in a grassy area behind a gas station at the intersection of East 10th Street and North Mitthoefer Road.
When the suspect saw police, he immediately surrendered and was taken into custody by IMPD without incident. Police said they found a handgun next to the suspect.
The man told officers he was having trouble breathing, and an ambulance was called.
The responding EMS crew checked him out but said he was okay to be taken to the jail.
By the time a transportation vehicle arrived at the scene to take him to jail, he was complaining of breathing problems again and a second ambulance was called. He died in the back of the ambulance.
"The Indianapolis EMS family would like to extend our sincere condolences," said IEMS Chief Charles Miramonti, MD. "We have already launched a full internal investigation, and, at this time, are confident the highest level of response and care was provided."
The county coroner is scheduled to perform an autopsy to determine cause of death.
The suspect's identity has not been released while authorities contact his family.
