(LOWELL) - The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has asked the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to deny a request for a proposed limestone quarry in northwestern Indiana, saying it would likely have an adverse effect on the Kankakee River ecosystem.
IDEM is reviewing a permit request for the Singleton Stone LLC quarry in southern Lake County near Lowell, about 60 miles southeast of Chicago. The (Kankakee) Daily Journal reports the permit would allow the company to pump between 12 million and 52 million gallons of water per day into the ditch, which would worsen erosion.
IDEM permits specialist Marty Maupin told the (Merrillville) Post-Tribune the department received between 45 and 60 comments during the comment period. He says many projects don't receive any comments.
