(SOUTH BEND) - Indiana wildlife officials say black bears could begin taking up residence in Indiana.
A black bear that roamed into Indiana from southwestern Michigan this June was the first confirmed sighting in the state in 144 years.
Indiana Department of Natural Resources farmland game research biologist Budd Veverka says more black bears are likely to follow and the next one might cross the Ohio River from Kentucky or roam in from Ohio.
Veverka says the DNR is working on plans for bear management and public education.
DNR spokesman Phil Bloom says the agency wants to make sure the public is prepared the next time one comes around.
