(GOSHEN) - A northern Indiana school district has set Jan. 1 as the target date to retire the school’s Redskins mascot.
The Elkhart Truth reports that the Goshen School Board made the decision Tuesday night. The board voted in July to stop using the mascot, which has represented Goshen Community Schools for nearly 90 years.
Board President Cathie Cripe says work will start immediately with the goal of using a new mascot as of Jan. 1 and have the new mascot fully in use district-wide for the 2016-2017 school year.
A student-led group called the Mascot Selection and Celebration Steering Committee is in charge of choosing a new mascot. Goshen Middle School and Goshen High School students and alumni who live in the district have through Sunday to submit suggestions.
